Rhode Island School District Spending & Outcomes — 64 Districts

Explore Rhode Island school spending, school funding and outcomes from official Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), Division of Municipal Finance (DMF) and NCES sources. Directory identities and agency status are from NCES 2023–24, joined to RIDE by its own two-digit LEA code: 36 school districts (four of them regional), 23 charter schools and 5 state schools. Per-pupil expenditure is RIDE's Report Card figure for fiscal 2016–17 to 2023–24; each Report Card reports the prior fiscal year, and each figure is labelled with the year it describes. Line items are RIDE's Uniform Chart of Accounts FY2023 actuals by function, object, program, job class and location, excluding capital projects and debt service as RIDE's segment workbook does; each segment was checked to add up to the LEA total before it was published. UCOA totals and per-pupil spending on the same basis run from FY2010 to FY2024: each year from RIDE's own workbook (FY2019 and FY2021 from the next year's), and FY2024, for which RIDE has posted no workbook, summed from RIDE's UCOA database only where that method reproduces the LEA's FY2023 workbook total exactly; otherwise it is withheld. Rhode Island has no school tax: school districts cannot levy one, and schools are funded by a municipal appropriation. Each district page shows its city or town's audited appropriation to its schools (DMF Municipal Transparency Portal, FY2016–FY2024) beside that municipality's own property tax rates by class (DMF tables for FY2013 to FY2026; for Providence, West Warwick and Cumberland only the FY2025 and FY2026 tables), total levy (DMF, FY2025 and FY2026), and its audited levy subject to the statutory cap (FY2019–FY2024) and current-year collection rate (FY2016–FY2024) from the same portal, all labelled as municipal; Cumberland and East Providence run fiscal years that straddle their tax year, so their part-year collection rates are withheld; a regional district shows each member town separately. Charter and state schools receive no town appropriation, and no tax figure is shown for them. State aid is RIDE's enacted education aid for FY2021 and FY2023 to FY2027, and its revised aid for FY2020 and FY2022, each labelled as such. Students (with race and ethnicity, 2024–25), assessments (2024–25, by grade and by student group, and 2017–18 to 2023–24 for all students), accountability growth and chronic absence (LEAs 2021–22 to 2024–25, schools from 2017–18), chronic absence by student group (2024–25), graduation (classes of 2017 to 2024, and by student group for 2023 and 2024), college enrollment (classes of 2017 to 2023) and educator data (2017–18 to 2024–25) are RIDE Report Card files. Rhode Island gave no state tests in 2019–20 and made no accountability determinations for 2019–20 or 2020–21, so those years are absent, never zero. Out-of-school suspensions per 100 students and teacher chronic absence are published for LEAs only, because at school level most schools sit at exactly zero. School districts also show their own audited school-department compensation, overtime, active-employee health and dental insurance, pension contributions and full-time employee counts filed with the Municipal Transparency Portal (FY2016–FY2024), each a total across bargaining groups and never an average. The economically disadvantaged share is RIDE's own group, which RIDE does not define as free or reduced-price meal eligibility. Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, high-school course enrollment, discipline, restraint and seclusion counts and support-staff FTE are from the federal Civil Rights Data Collection 2023–24, with reserve codes left out rather than counted as zero; for Tiverton, Trinity Academy and the MET, which that collection does not cover for Advanced Placement, RIDE's copy of the 2021–22 collection is shown, labelled with its year. Rhode Island publishes no average or per-position salary, so none is shown or derived. Each field retains its source period. Withheld figures do not mean zero. Rhode Island tax grievance and civic audit packs are unavailable.
